Professional Background

Joel Overlund has practiced family law in Oregon for 25 years. He obtained his undergraduate degree in 1981 from Concordia College in Morehead, MN, with a major in Business Administration and minors in Political Science and Religion. He earned his law degree in 1987 from Willamette University College of Law in Salem, OR.

From 1990-2013 Joel practiced family law with St. Andrew Legal Clinic (SALC) a low-income legal service provider in the Portland, OR metropolitan area. SALC specialized in family law cases. He was a staff attorney with SALC for 5 years and then became the Executive Director, a position which he held for 18 years. As Executive Director, Joel was the firm’s managing partner, overseeing a staff of 18 lawyers at one point. During his time, SALC grew from one office with 4 lawyers to four offices with 18 lawyers serving low-income people throughout Oregon. His job combined handling cases, doing trial work, working with a Board of Directors, and helping with outreach and fundraising. Joel joined Zimmer Family Law in 2013.

Practice Emphasis

Joel’s practice experience includes all aspects of family law, including dissolution of marriage, unmarried custody and parenting time, custody and support modifications and enforcement, third party custody; guardianships and FAPA/domestic violence cases.

Joel is a skilled advocate for his clients. He is a dedicated, compassionate, caring attorney who works hard to ensure all his clients achieve a fair, just result. Although most cases in which he handles are settled without going to court, he does enjoy litigation when it is necessary. He enjoys working with families in crisis, helping them navigate a challenging legal system effectively, efficiently and with integrity.

Joel has also been formally trained in Collaborative Law. Collaborative Law is a voluntary dispute resolution process in which parties settle family law issues without direct court involvement. He believes that the Collaborative Law process makes sense for some clients.

Joel is married, has three children, five grandchildren and two cats. He enjoys cycling, back packing, traveling, reading and a good bottle of wine.
